The Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, Mr Peter Obi, has responded to rumours claiming he is planning to defect to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2027 presidential race.
In a statement released on Tuesday by his media aide, Ibrahim Umar of the Peter Obi Media Reach (POMR), Obi dismissed the speculation.
The former Anambra State governor described as fake a circulating statement purportedly issued in his name, which both denied a move to the PDP and reaffirmed loyalty to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
“The Peter Obi Media Reach (POMR) has been made aware of a purported statement from our principal, Peter Obi, denying joining the Peoples Democratic Party and reaffirming his commitment to the African Democratic Congress,” the statement read.

Obi noted that he remains focused on his vision for a new Nigeria and has not made any such declaration regarding party allegiance.
“Peter Obi has consistently made his stance clear regarding the ongoing coalition efforts and does not need anyone speaking on his behalf,” the statement read. “He will not tolerate false attributions made to serve anyone’s personal or political agenda.”
The media office also urged the public to ignore any statements not released through Obi’s verified media channels. “Only messages from his official handle or this media office should be regarded as authentic,” it stated.
This comes in response to comments made by former Borno State Governor and All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, who, during a recent interview on Channels Television, alleged that Obi was preparing to return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to run in the 2027 presidential election.
“As far as politics is concerned, the ADC does not exist,” Sheriff claimed. “From the information I have, Peter Obi will soon return to the PDP and contest as its presidential candidate.”
