Labour Party’s Peter Obi has celebrated philanthropist Mac Oruche on his 72nd birthday, praising his decision to donate ₦100 million towards building a School of Nursing Sciences in Rivers State. Obi, who attended the Thanksgiving event in Port Harcourt, also contributed ₦15 million to support the project.
Obi described Oruche as “one of the very few I can truly call my dear elder brother, owing to his deep compassion for humanity and society.” He recalled their long-standing discussions on Nigeria’s development, particularly in health, education, and poverty alleviation.
According to Obi, Oruche used his birthday celebration to draw attention to the urgent need for investment in healthcare, education, and human infrastructure. “True to his compassionate spirit, he chose not to speak about himself but about the urgent need to invest in healthcare, education, and human infrastructure,” Obi wrote on X.

Obi said the planned School of Nursing Sciences would be a timely intervention for a state with fewer than three nursing schools despite the pressing demand for trained health professionals.
“Instead of hosting an elaborate party, Mr. Mac donated ₦100 million towards this vision. As someone equally committed to improving healthcare, I was honored to support him with ₦15 million, alongside contributions from many others inspired by his generosity,” he stated.
The post attracted praise from Nigerians online. Tam Gunuboh said, “Amidst the chaos and national decline, your transformational leadership and dedicated service to humanity is what’s giving many frustrated citizens a glimpse of hope for a better Nigeria in the near future.”
ADC Vanguard wrote, “A rare example of leadership in action, where compassion meets commitment. Mr. Mac Oruche’s choice to turn a personal milestone into a public blessing, and your own support for this vision, remind us that nation-building starts with selfless investment in people.”
Obi ended his message with a tribute to Oruche’s life of service, saying, “Happy 72nd birthday, my dear elder brother. You remind us that true celebration lies in service to our society and to humanity.”
