VIDEO: How Peter Obi, Senator Tony Nwoye Intervened to Prevent Market Riot in Anambra After NAFDAC Shutdown, Restored Calm

Tension erupted at the popular Ogbo-Ogu Market, Bridge Head, Onitsha, Anambra following an enforcement operation by the National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).

The agency, led by Dr. Martins Iluyomade, Director of NAFDAC South East Zone, raided the market and confiscated a large quantity of adulterated, substandard, and expired drugs from various shops.

The operation sparked outrage among traders, who protested what they described as heavy-handed enforcement, leading to rising tensions that threatened to escalate into a full-blown riot.

In response to the unrest, former Anambra State Governor and 2023 presidential candidate for Labour party, Peter Obi, and Senator representing Anambra North, Tony Nwoye, stepped in to mediate and restore calm. Through dialogue with both the traders and NAFDAC officials, they addressed the traders’ concerns while emphasizing the need for regulatory compliance to protect public health

. Their intervention helped to de-escalate the situation, preventing violence and ensuring a peaceful resolution.
