Daniel Bwala, the former spokesperson for the Atiku/Okowa Presidential Campaign Organisation, has hinted that Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 Presidential Election, is considering joining the Social Democratic Party (SDP) alongside former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai.
Bwala aired this claim on his X handle on Friday.
He noted that Obi’s potential departure from the Labour Party stems from the current internal strife within the party, exacerbated by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) threatening to intervene.
Obi, formerly Governor of Anambra State in the Southeast region, aligned himself with the Labour Party in May 2023, during the lead-up to the 2023 general elections, subsequent to his departure from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Bwala, a member of the PDP who has declared support for President Bola Tinubu of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), wrote on his X handle, “Peter Obi @PeterObi allegedly planning to unite with El-rufai @elrufai in Social Democratic Party as Nigerian Labour Congress set to take ownership and custody of their political party, the @NgLabour.
“Recall that there was a judgment of court that states that Nigeria Labour Congress owns Labour Party. NLC is now prepared to take custody of that party.
“Twist and turns in the coming days. But all that will not give sleepless night to @officialABAT who himself has his magic wands to wield.”

On Wednesday, El-Rufai was sighted at the national secretariat of the Social Democratic Party in Abuja, as captured in a widely circulated video on social media.
He paid a consultation visit to the national chairman of the SDP, Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam.
During the meeting, a voice cautioned against leaking photos of the visit on social media, but El-Rufai dismissed the concern, stating, “I don’t care.”
Last August, SaharaReporters had detailed the Nigerian Senate’s failure to confirm El-Rufai’s nomination as a minister, alongside other nominees.
Despite Bola Tinubu’s submission of 49 ministerial nominees for screening, including former Deputy Governor of Taraba State Senator Abubakar Danladi and Delta State nominee Stella Okotete, the Senate did not confirm their appointments.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio cited uncleared security reports as the reason for the non-confirmation of El-Rufai and the other nominees.
