Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, has slammed Bola Tinubu’s administration for celebrating revenue achievements while retired military officers and other public servants continue to protest unpaid pensions and gratuities.
He described the development as shameful, stressing that those who defended and built the nation should not be reduced to begging for their rightful entitlements.
Obi, in a statement on X, said surpassing revenue targets means nothing if the proceeds do not translate into improved welfare for citizens.

He noted that critical sectors of the economy, especially small and medium enterprises (SMEs), were suffering from lack of funds, with many unable to meet obligations to staff and banks.

The former Anambra governor added that the neglect of retirees and economic players worsens poverty and unemployment.
He lamented that even institutions that support SMEs are under pressure, while protests from unpaid groups continue to highlight the insensitivity of government.
Obi urged the Federal Government to act responsibly and with compassion by settling the arrears of retired servicemen and other public servants.
He insisted that good governance must reflect integrity and sensitivity, adding that a “New Nigeria” is only possible if citizens are not thrown into debt and despair.
