The 2023 presidential candidate from the Labour Party and former governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, has received The Sun Political Icon of the Year award in Lagos on February 17, 2024, alongside 33 other recipients.
During a meeting with The Sun team led by Managing Director/Editor-in-Chief Mr. Onuoha Ukeh, Obi expressed his gratitude for the acknowledgment, citing the newspaper’s commitment to justice and fairness.
He praised The Sun for its enduring role in national development and its dedication to truthful political reporting.
Ukeh explained that Obi was chosen for the award due to his bold decision in 2022 to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and join the Labour Party (LP), where he subsequently became the presidential candidate.
The Sun MD applauded Obi’s groundbreaking political campaign in 2022-2023, which garnered substantial support from various demographics and ignited a new national consciousness for a better Nigeria.
In recognition of his influential political endeavors during the 2023 election and beyond, Obi was honored as the Political Icon of the Year by The Sun Publishing Limited.
Alongside Obi, other distinguished individuals, including prominent business leaders, governors, and social advocates, will also be recognized with various awards.
