Plane Crashes at London Southend Airport

A small aircraft crashed at London Southend Airport on Sunday, according to police.

Essex Police said in a statement they were called shortly before 4 p.m. local time to reports of a “serious incident” at the airport, located about 45 miles east of London.

Photos shared on social media showed flames and thick black smoke rising from the crash site. The aircraft involved was reported to be 39 feet in length.

Authorities have not yet released details about the plane’s destination or the number of people on board.

“We are working alongside all emergency services at the scene, and this work is expected to continue for several hours,” Essex Police said.

Local Member of Parliament David Burton-Sampson urged the public to avoid the area to allow emergency crews to respond.

“My thoughts are with everyone involved,” he added.
