Plateau State Declares One Week of Mourning After Wave of Brutal Attacks Leaves 200 Dead

Plateau

In a response to the recent surge of violence in Plateau State, Governor Caleb Mutfwang has declared a one-week mourning period beginning January 1st, 2024. The state has been shaken by separate attacks that claimed the lives of about 200 individuals and left scores wounded over the past two weeks.

Governor Mutfwang, in a New Year broadcast, solemnly announced the mourning period, during which flags will fly at half-mast as a mark of respect for the victims. He urged citizens to utilize this time for intense prayers, seeking divine intervention against the forces that have wrought havoc on their communities.

“As a mark of honor for the memory of the deceased, I wish to declare a week of mourning from January 1st to January 8th, 2024. During this period of mourning, flags will fly at half-mast,” he stated.

Religious leaders were called upon to play a pivotal role in the healing process. The governor appealed to Muslim clerics to dedicate Friday, January 5th, 2024, and Christian clergy to utilize Sunday, January 7th, 2024, as special prayer days for lasting peace in Plateau State.

Governor Mutfwang’s move comes in the wake of the Fulani terrorist attacks, which have ignited widespread condemnation and prompted renewed calls for a comprehensive probe into the assaults.

The situation underscores the persistent challenges faced by regions in North-West and central Nigeria, plagued by bandit militias, Fulani terrorist attacks, and the resulting escalation of violence.
