Police Arrest Nigerian Catholic Priest for Shooting Boy Dead Over Firecracker Use During Mass

A Catholic priest in Imo State has been detained by law enforcement following a fatal shooting during a church service.

The incident reportedly took place on December 31, 2024, at a church in Amaimo, Ikeduru Local Government Area of Imo State.

According to reports, the priest allegedly shot a young boy who was using fireworks within the church premises during the mass. The shooting resulted in one fatality on the spot, while another individual was injured and hospitalized.

The Imo State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Henry Okoye, confirmed the incident to SaharaReporters on Thursday.

He stated, “We are aware of the incident. The priest is in custody, and investigation is going on to ascertain the remote facts surrounding the incident. Further development on the case will be communicated in due course, please.”

At the time of the report, the names of the priest and the deceased had not been disclosed.

The tragic event highlights concerns about the use of fireworks in public spaces and raises questions regarding safety measures during religious gatherings. Authorities have assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway.
