A clash between Delta State Police Command and protesting women in Ughelli turned violent as officers resorted to force, leaving one woman shot and several injured.
The protest, led by women from Oteri-Ughelli, aimed to highlight alleged harassment and extortion by local police. Despite their peaceful intent, the situation escalated when officers refused to address their grievances.
Eyewitnesses reported a peaceful protest until police used tear gas and firearms against unarmed women. One woman was shot in the leg, and others were beaten.
Harvest Ugbhwiako, one of the protest leaders, voiced their frustration: “Police unlawfully arrested and extorted our children. We had to pay hefty sums for their release.”

Efe Peter, the community’s President General, condemned the police’s use of force: “Our women protested peacefully, seeking justice. Instead, they faced violence.”
Police Area Commander in Ughelli, ACP Adebayo, promised action: “We’re investigating and will sanction erring officers.”
