The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has detained officials of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Maitama, following a stampede that resulted in the deaths of ten people during a food distribution exercise last weekend.
The incident has drawn widespread public concern, with groups like the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) calling for accountability, referencing similar tragedies, including one in Anambra State that claimed 22 lives and another in Oyo State that led to legal proceedings.
Reacting to the arrests, the Catholic Archbishop of Abuja Diocese, Most Rev. Ignatius Kaigama, condemned the government’s actions, describing them as “misplaced zeal.”
In his Christmas message, he called for compassion and urged authorities to provide support to those affected by the tragedy instead of criminalizing their efforts.
FCT Police spokeswoman SP Josephine Adeh clarified that individuals invited for questioning have been released. She emphasized that the investigation aims to establish accountability and ensure the sanctity of human life, denying allegations that the church is being targeted.
Further questioning may take place as the investigation continues.
