Police Nab Househelp, Husband for Stealing $51,000 from Employer’s Residence in Lagos

In a shocking incident reported by the Zone 2 Command Headquarters of the Police Force in Onikan, Lagos, a domestic staff named Blessing Effiong and her husband, Bassey Effiong, have been apprehended for stealing $51,000 from their employer’s residence in the Lekki area.

Blessing, recommended for employment by an agent named Anthony, began her role on December 23, 2023. However, within just three days of starting her job, she fled with the stolen money, escaping to Cross River State along with her husband.

After a thorough investigation, conducted by the police, both suspects were arrested on January 31, 2024.

It was revealed that Blessing had approached Anthony under false pretenses, providing misleading contact information and using registered phone numbers not associated with her identity. Additionally, she failed to complete her employment application form.

Despite initially denying the extent of the theft, Blessing eventually confessed to stealing $30,000 and admitted to giving $20,000 of the stolen money to her husband, Bassey Effiong.

In his confession, Bassey disclosed that he used the funds to settle his late mother’s medical bills, purchase a Tipper Truck, Two Motorcycles, and complete a construction project in Cross River State.

Following the completion of the investigation, both suspects have been charged to court under the directive of the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 2 Command, AIG Olatoye A. Durosinmi.
