Renowned political economist and Labour Party chieftain, Pat Utomi, has raised concerns over the actions of Nigeria Police operatives in Rivers State, accusing them of acting as “uniformed thugs for those in power.”
In a social media post after his visit to Port Harcourt, Utomi shared his worries about the tense atmosphere in the state, describing his return as a moment that confirmed his long-held fears.
He alleged that forces loyal to Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, have fostered an environment where citizens feel both under pressure and oddly indifferent, despite what he called “the smell of coming anarchy” looming in the air.
“Wike and Fubara forces line up, the people felt stressed but strangely unperturbed; the smell of coming anarchy in the air mixed with the rains that came down sporadically, and the elders spoke softly about being captured and held hostage,” he wrote on X.
Utomi’s critique extended to the judiciary, which he accused of having “no shame” in their potential complicity in the erosion of democracy.

“Meanwhile the police kept true to the typecast as uniformed thugs of those in power and the judiciary continued to feel no shame they may take the blame for the end of Nigerian history. Meanwhile, some went off on leave like Nero fiddling as Rome burnt,” Utomi stated.
Utomi ended his message with a grim reflection on Nigeria’s leadership crisis, quoting lyrics from Hot Chocolate’s Cicero Park: “Life is dying out… don’t let it happen in your time.”
He urged elders, professionals, and students to take action before the “creeping” anarchy takes full hold, warning that those in power appear unaware of the seriousness of the situation.
