Police Commissioner Reportedly Removes, Replaces DPO After He Refused to Release Armed Criminal Suspects Linked to Politician

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Ishola Olanrewaju Olawale, has allegedly redeployed the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ijeshatedo, Mushin Police Division for refusing to release criminal suspects caught with firearms.

According to SaharaReporters , the DPO, identified only as Matthew, received notice of his removal and replacement shortly after declining a request from an anonymous caller to release the suspects.

According to the source, three suspects were arrested on Sunday night and detained at the Ijeshatedo Police Division. However, on Monday, a caller, suspected to be a top politician, contacted DPO Matthew and demanded their release.

Being a strict and disciplined officer, the DPO insisted on verifying the caller’s identity and the reason for the request. The caller abruptly ended the call, and all attempts by the DPO to return the call were unsuccessful.

A few hours later, Matthew reportedly received a call from the Commissioner of Police, informing him of his removal and immediate replacement with a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP).

“The Lagos Commissioner of Police removed the DPO of Ijeshatedo, Mushin, following an anonymous call demanding the release of suspects caught with guns,” the source said.

“DPO Matthew and his team arrested individuals found in possession of firearms. A man suspected to be a top politician then called the DPO, requesting their release. When the DPO sought to verify the caller’s identity, the number became unreachable.

“In a surprising turn of events, the DPO was replaced within hours, and the new DPO released the suspects. This happened on Monday, February 10, 2025. The former DPO was instructed to report to the Lagos Police Command.”

The source added that Matthew is known for his strict discipline, which is why he refused to release the suspects without proper verification.

Efforts to get confirmation from the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, were unsuccessful, as he responded via text message that he was unable to take calls.

However, a police source told SaharaReporters that no official signal was issued regarding the matter, as the order for Matthew’s removal came directly from the Commissioner of Police.
