300 Inmates Detained in Kano Prison Without Documentation of Crimes, Police Says

The Solicitors Scheme Advisory Committee, established by the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, has uncovered a troubling situation at Kurmawa Custodial Center in Kano.

According to the committee’s findings during unscheduled visits to various facilities, over 300 inmates awaiting trial are being detained without proper documentation of their alleged crimes.

Led by Kano State Commissioner of Police, Muhammad-Hussaini Gumel, the committee is tasked with investigating human rights violations in both criminal and civil cases. Gumel emphasized that their primary objective is to identify these cases, document them accurately, and ensure they are forwarded to the appropriate authorities for necessary action.

During their recent visit to Kurmawa Custodial Center, officers at the facility revealed that many inmates have been awaiting trial for years without any recorded case details.

Shockingly, some of these individuals lack designated courts for their charges and have no documented records of their cases despite being in custody for extended periods.

Furthermore, it was noted that several inmates remain detained simply because they cannot afford legal representation, highlighting the urgent need to address this systemic issue.
