Despite History of Ignoring Court Orders, Police to Obey Court Ruling Halting Sanusi’s Reinstatement

The police and army in Kano have pledged to comply with a court order halting the reinstatement of Sanusi as Emir. Kano Police Commissioner Mohammed Gumel announced this commitment at an emergency press conference, stressing the importance of maintaining peace and security in the state.

Commissioner Gumel stated, “The matter described will be addressed by the Court on the 3rd of June, 2024.” This announcement follows the Federal High Court in Kano’s order (SUIT No. FHC/KN/CS/182/2024) issued on May 23, 2024. The court order has directed all law enforcement agencies to adhere strictly to the ruling.

In his address, Commissioner Gumel emphasized the collaboration between the police, military, and other security agencies to uphold security. He urged the public to remain calm and cooperate with the authorities. “The Police in the State are working together with the military and other security agencies, fully equipped to provide adequate security for everyone. We are committed to carrying out our statutory duties as provided by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he said.

Gumel appealed to the residents of Kano to respect the law and maintain peace. “Law-abiding people of Kano State are known for their revered cultural heritage and respect for constituted authorities. In this regard, we advise everyone to remain calm, patient, and cooperate with security agencies as the matter will be addressed by the Court on the 3rd of June, 2024,” he added.

The commissioner warned that any attempt to disrupt the peace would be met with strict consequences. “The position of the law is very clear. Whoever is found planning to disrupt the peace in the state will be arrested and face the full wrath of the law,” Gumel stated.

He further assured that the police, in conjunction with other security agencies, are prepared to sustain peace and ensure the safety of the state’s residents. “Miscreants should stay clear of violence. Anyone found with such tendencies will be ruthlessly dealt with according to the law of the land. The combined security agencies in the state have set all machinery in place to ensure no breakdown of law and order. The safety and security of all the inhabitants in the state remain sacrosanct,” he said.

This commitment to obey the court order comes amid a backdrop of previous instances where the police have defied court rulings. For example, on June 13, 2023, the National Industrial Court in Abuja ordered the arrest of Inspector General of Police Usman Alkali and Force Secretary AIG Hafeez Inuwa for contempt of court. Similarly, on January 9, 2024, police attempted to rearrest Chioma Okoli against a court order over the Erisco Tomato case. Another incident occurred on April 5, 2024, where the police allegedly ignored a court order to remand a freight forwarder.
