A recently shared video shows a policeman threatening to shoot a man during an argument, while accusing him of being a cultist without any proof at night in Benin City, the capital of Edo State.
In the video, the policeman is heard issuing threats and displaying aggressive behavior despite attempts by bystanders to de-escalate the situation.
“Make we play am rough?,” the policeman asked repeatedly as he cocked his gun.
“I go fire you talk say you be cultist. I go fire you. Everybody know for Benin. I go fire you. You dey crase? You dey mad?” he said aggressively.

This incident is yet another example of police brutality and misconduct in Nigeria, a problem that persists despite public outcry and reforms.

The issue of police brutality in Nigeria has remained prevalent, even four years after the 2020 #EndSARS protests, where citizens demanded an end to police violence, unlawful arrests, and extrajudicial killings.
Amnesty International recently reported that cases of police misconduct, including unlawful detention, torture, and extortion, continue to be recorded almost daily.
