Policeman, Vigilante Member Reportedly Killed in Rivers as Tension, Protests Spread

A policeman and a member of the Omuma Security Planning and Advisory Committee (OSPAC) are feared dead in Omuma Local Government Area of Rivers State.

This incident coincides with rising tension and protests across all 23 local government areas in the state, following the end of the three-year tenure of the elected LGA Chairmen and ward councillors.

There have been reports of shootings by alleged security personnel at the Port Harcourt City LGA Council Secretariat, as well as at Obio/Akpor, Emohua, Eleme, and Khana LGAs by unidentified individuals.

By noon, it was reported that two people had been shot and killed in Omuma LGA amidst the escalating violence.

A local source indicated that policemen assigned to a politician in the area initially fired at vigilante members who were part of a group clashing at the Omuma council secretariat.

In retaliation, the victims’ associates attacked the security personnel.

At the time of reporting, state police authorities had not confirmed the incident, although a police source in Omuma confirmed that two people were shot.
