Oby Ezekwesili, the former Minister of Education, widely recognized as ‘Madam Due Process,’ has publicly criticized Nigeria’s political class, labeling them as the primary problem of Nigeria.
During a talk on her X handle at #VawulenceSpace on Tuesday, Ezekwesili emphasized the urgent need for citizens to actively confront political leaders.
“Nigeria has a problematic political class, and we must engage them,” Ezekwesili declared.
She highlighted the significant impact citizens can have when they unite for a common cause, referencing the successful push for technology integration in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) amendment bill.
“Did you see what happened when the citizens collectively decided they wanted technology in the INEC amendment bill, then they acted towards it?” she asked rhetorically.
Ezekwesili stressed that the power of the citizens to effect change has not been fully tested, urging a more comprehensive confrontation with the political class.
“The power of the citizens to change things, we have not tested it enough. We have to test it all the way to really confront this political class that has decided to be tone-deaf to the fact that the country is in crisis and in trouble,” she asserted.
“Many of the people, when you tell them the economic state of the poor segment of Nigeria, they think you are playing. They think you just want to create trouble, that you are not grateful for the supposed good things they have been doing,” she lamented.
“They don’t understand that there are ungoverned spaces.”
“We do need to get to the design table. We must design a different Nigeria, and the citizens are the ones with the power to make that happen,” Ezekwesili said.
