Pope Francis Calls for Global Peace During Christmas Celebrations

In his Christmas message, Pope Francis urged an end to conflicts worldwide, particularly highlighting the devastating wars in Gaza and Ukraine.

Speaking at the annual Christmas Day “Urbi and Orbi” mass, the Pope emphasized, “I reiterate my urgent appeal for the liberation of those still being held hostage… an end to military operations with their appalling harvest of innocent civilian victims.”

He called for peace in Israel and Palestine, where the ongoing war has cast a somber mood over Bethlehem’s festivities.

The Pope’s words resonated in the strife-torn regions, with Bethlehem toning down its traditional celebrations. A massive Palestinian flag in the town square declared, “The bells of Bethlehem ring for a ceasefire in Gaza.”

Meanwhile, inside Gaza, the humanitarian situation reached a critical point, with the World Health Organization expressing concern over “rising desperation due to acute hunger.”

Ukraine, celebrating Christmas on December 25 for the first time, faced the challenges of a nation invaded by Russia nearly two years ago.

The Ukrainian military reported downing 28 of the 31 drones launched by Russia on Christmas day. The move to align Christmas with the international calendar symbolized a shift away from Russian influence.

In regions unaffected by war, festive revelers embraced the holiday spirit. From beach gatherings in Sydney to the “Surfing Santas” celebration in Florida, people sought moments of joy.
