Port Harcourt-Aba Rail Track to be Completed in December – NRC

Nigeria Railway Corporation, NRC, Eastern District has said that by the end of this year, the first phase of the new rail tracks from Port Harcourt to Aba, Abia State, would be completed. The NRC, Eeastern District Manager, Prof. Ahmed Modibbo Mohammed, revealed this to the Governor of Abia, Dr. Alex Otti, when he visited the governor in government house, Umuahia.

This raises hopes for better mobility and regional economic development. The project, which spans 63 km, is a component of a wider effort to upgrade and expand Nigeria’s railway system. The project’s second phase, which runs from Aba to Umuahia, is expected to be finished in the first quarter of 2024.

Once operational, the train services are anticipated to offer an alternate mode of transportation and generate employment for young people. Economic activity in the area and elsewhere is predicted to increase as a result of this development.

Additionally, Mr. Modibbo made a plea for assistance in combating the threat of rail track vandalism. Governor Otti said that he would ensure the corporation’s security and educate the local populations about the importance of securing railway equipment.

Furthermore, Governor Otti issued a warning that anyone found damaging the rail tracks would face legal repercussions. The government’s dedication to ensuring the accomplishment and sustainability of this important infrastructure project is highlighted by this dire warning.

By December 2023, people and companies in Port Harcourt, Aba, and the neighbouring areas can anticipate better transit services thanks to these projects. Nigeria’s efforts to improve its railway infrastructure and support economic growth have reached a key turning point with the completion of this project.
