Premier League clubs have agreed to introduce semi-automated offside technology next season, aimed at speeding VAR decisions.
The move decided upon at a shareholders’ meeting on Thursday, seeks to reduce the time spent on offside checks by around 30 seconds on average.
According to a statement from the Premier League, this technology will use optical player tracking to swiftly and consistently place the virtual offside line.
“The technology will provide quicker and consistent placement of the virtual offside line, based on optical player tracking,” a Premier League statement said.
It also promises to enhance the viewing experience for supporters with improved broadcast graphics.

FIFA previously employed semi-automated offside technology at the 2022 men’s World Cup and during trials at the Club World Cup.
While referees will still be responsible for subjective judgments, such as whether an offside player interferes with play, the new system aims to streamline the process.
Although the Premier League has not disclosed its technology partner or finalized contracts, the plan is to implement the system after one of the international breaks in September, October, or November.
