The Deputy Comptroller of Corrections at the Suleja Custodial Facility in Niger State, Ibrahim Yau, has highlighted the challenges of managing correctional facilities amid Nigeria’s economic hardships.
Speaking during a recent visit by officials from the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria (LACoN), Yau said the financial strain has made it increasingly difficult to provide decent meals for inmates.
Yau explained that the daily feeding allowance is insufficient to meet the nutritional needs of inmates, noting that the Suleja facility, originally designed to hold 250 inmates, now accommodates 405.
The Deputy Comptroller expressed appreciation for the support of non-governmental organizations, stressing that the government cannot address the issue alone.

In response, Oliver Chukwuma, head of LACoN’s decongestion unit, reassured that the council would continue to support efforts to alleviate overcrowding in custodial centres.
He added that LACoN’s Director General, Aliyu Bagudu Abubakar, is advocating for the adoption of virtual hearings to reduce operational costs across correctional facilities.
