National Population and Housing Census is slated to occur in November 2024, marking the first comprehensive headcount since 2006.
Sources within the National Population Commission (NPC) revealed this information, emphasizing the importance of the upcoming census for accurate demographic data crucial for governance and development.
Nigeria’s current population estimate, stagnant since the 2006 census, stands at 140 million. Previous attempts to conduct a census in 2022, under the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, faced indefinite postponement.
However, Bola Tinubu has expressed steadfast support for the census, underscoring the vital role accurate information plays in the nation’s development.
During the launch of the Electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics System in November, Tinubu articulated his commitment, stating, “The population remains the greatest asset of the nation in her development process.”

“Collecting accurate and reliable information is essential for good governance and aligns perfectly with our Renewed Hope Agenda.”
“The commission will therefore be supported in the conduct of the next census,” Tinubu added.
While initial discussions did not reveal a specific date, high-ranking NPC officials, speaking anonymously, disclosed that the census is tentatively scheduled for November 2024. Budget discussions with the Presidency are already in progress, indicating a positive trajectory for the census approval.
“We have met with the President, and discussions are progressing,” they revealed. “The Presidency has reviewed our budget proposal, and the census will be conducted in November next year.”
The NPC has submitted a budget request of N693.3 million for the census, with additional allocations earmarked for related activities such as data management, publicity, and research. # 2024
