Thousands of youths flooded the streets of Jigawa State on Saturday in protest against perceived injustice in the ongoing teachers’ recruitment process.
The demonstrators, identifying as J-Teach staff, accused the Universal Basic Education Board of orchestrating an aptitude test to hinder their chances of securing permanent teaching positions.
This protest follows Governor Umar Namadi’s approval of permanent appointments for 3,000 teachers to address educational gaps within the state.
The J-Teach staff gathered at various test centers designated State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), prominently displaying placards with inscriptions such as ‘Justice for J-Teach’ and ‘No more exams.’
Their frustration stems from serving as temporary teachers under the J-Teach program, and they claim that the government’s recruitment initiative is riddled with irregularities.

While some protesting teachers objected to the competency examination, others argued that they had already undergone multiple tests in the past. The demonstrators voiced their grievances against what they perceive as an unfair process jeopardizing their chances of obtaining permanent roles.
In response, the state government remains adamant about proceeding with the competency test as part of the recruitment process. #Jigawa State
