Protest Breaks Out in Gaya Over Repeal of Kano Emirates Council Law

Protesters have taken to the streets of Gaya, one of the five emirates affected by the recent repeal of the Kano Emirates Council Law.

The law, which had been used by former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje to dethrone Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II in 2020, was repealed by the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) controlled House of Assembly.

Governor Abba Yusuf, upon signing the new law on Thursday, announced the dissolution of four emirates created by Ganduje: Rano, Gaya, Karaye, and Bichi.

The governor also instructed all monarchs, including Alhaji Aliyu Ibrahim Abdulkadir, Emir of Gaya, to hand over their positions to Comrade Abdulsalam Gwarzo, the Deputy Governor who oversees the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.

Residents reported that the dethroned Emir vacated the palace quietly at midnight on Thursday.

Armed security personnel were present, and there were no signs of violence or resistance in the town.

However, by Sunday morning, residents of Gaya gathered in protest, rejecting the dissolution of their emirate. They wielded placards and chanted anti-government slogans, alleging that the dissolution was politically motivated and unjust.
