Violent Protest Over Hike in School Fees Leads to Indefinite Closure of Michael Okpara University, Abia

Students of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike, Abia State, staged a protest on Tuesday morning against the hike in school fees.

The protest turned violent as some hoodlums reportedly joined the students and vandalized some of the university’s facilities.

They also attacked the Vice Chancellor’s car and some staff members.

The university authorities responded by suspending all academic activities indefinitely and ordering the students to leave the campus by 5.00 pm on Tuesday.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Maduebibisi Iwe, issued a statement saying that the decision was taken to “notify the public that the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike, Abia State woke up to experience the violation of the long-existing peace of the university this morning.”

He added that the university management had to “safeguard life and properties on campus” by shutting down the university “indefinitely” on behalf of the Senate.

He appealed to the students to remain calm and peaceful and assured them that the matter would be resolved amicably.

He also condemned the actions of the miscreants who took advantage of the situation to cause mayhem.
