Amid Imminent Nationwide Protest, NASS Members Begin 7 Weeks Recess, to Resume September 17

The Senate and House of Representatives have begun their annual recess as Nigerians prepare to commence a nationwide protest on the 1st of August.

Before the break, both chambers of the National Assembly passed several significant bills.

Among these were amendments to the minimum wage law, Bola Tinubu’s request for a N6.2 trillion increase in the 2024 budget, and changes to the 2023 Finance Act, among others.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio mentioned on Tuesday that Tinubu might sign the minimum wage bill by Friday.

“We are hoping that Mr. President signs the minimum wage bill before Friday,” Akpabio said.

The national assembly has also approved a bill to implement a one-time windfall tax on banks’ foreign exchange earnings.

Meanwhile, several committees within the national assembly are set to meet this week and the next, with both chambers scheduled to resume on September 17.
