On Monday, a group of Nigerians gathered at the Nigeria House in London to protest the circumstances surrounding the death of singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, also known as Mohbad.
The demonstrators carried various placards and banners, demanding justice for the late Mohbad. They urged the government to conduct a thorough investigation into the cause of his death.
In a video obtained by our correspondent, the protesters expressed their frustration over the delay and eventual outcome of the autopsy results.
They also urged police authorities to investigate the individuals who were with the late singer at the time of his death.
Their demands were formally presented in a letter handed to an official of the High Commission.
Mohbad, a former artist signed to Marlian Music owned by Naira Marley, passed away on September 12 at the age of 27. The circumstances of his death have sparked significant controversy on social media.
In response, the Lagos State Police Command launched a 13-member special investigation team on September 18, 2023, to probe Mohbad’s death.
His death also led to the arrest of Naira Marley and controversial Lagos socialite, Balogun Eletu, aka Sam Larry, amongst others.
His body was exhumed on September 21, 2023, for an autopsy to determine the cause of his death.
In September 2023, state Police Public Relations Officer Benjamin Hundeyin tweeted that the autopsy had been completed and the police were “awaiting results.”
By April, it was reported that the toxicology test to ascertain the cause of the music star’s death had been finalized.
The result was sent to the pathologist who conducted the autopsy for analysis and interpretation.
PUNCH Metro exclusively reported that the US-based lab denied claims by the Lagos State Government that the toxicology test was conducted at its facility.
This revelation came after our correspondent embarked on a fact-finding mission to determine the musician’s cause of death.
In February 2024, the state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, responded to inquiries during a live telephone call with Ahmad Isah, the host of the Abuja-based online program Brekete Family, stating that the toxicology test was being conducted at NMS Labs in Pennsylvania, USA.
However, on May 15, a pathologist testified before the Coroner’s Court that the autopsy could not determine Mohbad’s cause of death due to the decomposition of his body.
On May 17, in response to PUNCH Metro’s inquiry, Esther Dede, Client Services Associate of the Forensics Division at NMS Labs, stated, “Unfortunately, we do not have a case for that patient.”
