Governor Sim Fubara of Rivers State faced intense backlash on Thursday when he attempted to offer money to #EndBadGovernance protesters at the Government House in Port Harcourt.
The protesters, demanding better governance and the resignation of Chief Bola Ahmed Tinubu, reacted angrily to Fubara’s gesture.
During his address, Governor Fubara thanked the demonstrators for their peaceful conduct and assured them that he would convey their grievances to Tinubu.
“I thank you for being peaceful. I thank you for coming. I feel your pain. I want to assure you that I will deliver your message to the President,” Fubara stated.
However, his attempt to placate the protesters by offering money for “pure water” was met with a strong negative reaction.
“I will give you a small thing for you to drink pure water,” he said, which provoked chants of “No, no, keep your money, we want good governance in Nigeria.”
Despite Fubara’s efforts to clarify his offer and address the protesters’ concerns, their frustration only grew, leading to increased hostility.
The governor eventually had to step down from the platform, waving his hands in a gesture of farewell as he left the scene.
