Public Confidence in the Judiciary Not at an All-Time Low- AGF

The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Lateef Fagbemi, has stated that public confidence in the judiciary is not at its all-time low.

He made this statement during a two-day meeting of the Body of Attorneys-General (BOAG) in Abuja.

Responding to questions from journalists, Fagbemi acknowledged the existence of some complaints but disagreed with the extent of the perceived lack of confidence.

He argued that it is not fair to judge the entire Judiciary situation based on a single problem.

“You see, when you have about 10 situations and you have a problem with one, the tendency of some of our people is to use that one to judge the entire situation,” he said.

“Do not forget, the Federal Ministry of Justice is also a critical stakeholder, but not the only stakeholder,” he added.

He assured that the ministry would do its utmost to address all the grey areas holistically.

Regarding the proposal for the separation of the office of the AGF from that of the Minister of Justice, Fagbemi said the issue would be revisited at the right time.

He refrained from giving personal views, stating, “It has been on the table for quite some time. At a time, it was rejected for reasons advanced. So, when the time comes, my colleagues and I will discuss that and bring input of people who are so well-informed and well-positioned to see what happens in other climes and see whether our situation should be different or if we should follow others.” #Judiciary
