Ramadan: Islamic Police, Hisbah Warns Christians, Others in Kano Against Eating in Public Places

The Department of Public Enlightenment within the Kano State Hisbah Board has issued a stern warning to non-Muslim residents regarding eating in public places during Ramadan.

Abba Sai’Idu, the Director-General of the Board, conveyed this message during a conversation with AIT.live.

He stressed that it is deemed unlawful for Christians and other non-Muslims to publicly eat or engage in activities that may challenge Islamic practices or tempt those observing the fast.

Sai’Idu also mentioned that the enforcement team is conducting heightened patrols throughout the city to apprehend any Muslims found engaging in behaviors not aligned with Islamic traditions during this sacred month.

The commencement of Ramadan was declared by Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), on Monday, March 11, 2024.

During Ramadan, Muslims are expected to refrain from eating, drinking, engaging in sexual activity, smoking, and other activities prohibited by the Holy Quran during daylight hours.

In a previous incident reported by SaharaReporters in 2021, the Kano State Hisbah Board apprehended eight women and three men for eating during Ramadan.

They were found eating in Tudun Murtala of Nassarawa Local Government and Sharada area of Kano Municipal during a raid conducted by Hisbah personnel.

Despite their denial of the accusations, stating they had reasons for their actions, they were detained by the authorities.
