Rivers Assembly Urges Fubara to Re-Present 2024 Budget Amid Political Crisis

On Tuesday, the Rivers House of Assembly adopted a resolution calling on Governor Siminialaye Fubara to submit the state’s 2024 budget and the medium-term expenditure framework for reevaluation.

This decision was made following the approval of a motion put forth by the Speaker, Mr. Martin Amaewhu, during the House’s 90th plenary session held at the legislators’ quarters in Port Harcourt.

In his motion, Amaewhu voiced his concerns about the House not having received the budget and the expenditure framework from the executive branch. He emphasized the necessity for the governor to submit these documents for approval, in line with the stipulations of the 1999 Constitution.

As reported by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Governor Fubara had previously submitted a N800 billion budget for 2024 to a four-member House of Assembly for approval on December 13. The governor promptly ratified the budget into law on December 14, just 24 hours after it was presented to the lawmakers.

Nonetheless, as a prerequisite to resolving the state’s political crisis, under a peace agreement brokered by Bola Tinubu, it is anticipated that Governor Fubara will resubmit the budget. (NAN)
