Report Individuals With Unexplainable, Ill-Gotten Wealth; Treat Them as Criminals — Delta CP Abaniwonda Urges Nigerians

The Commissioner of Police in Delta State, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, has called for the arrest and prosecution of individuals flaunting unexplainable wealth, urging Nigerians to treat them as common criminals.

CP Abaniwonda made this appeal through the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, during a radio program in the state.

He emphasized that Nigeria’s security challenges could be significantly reduced if society shuns and reports those involved in suspicious financial activities.

Abaniwonda criticized the trend of celebrating and endorsing criminal elements who display wealth without clear sources, citing it as a contributing factor to the rising crime and insecurity in the country.

According to him, this was and still is one of the major reasons why crime and insecurity are consistently on the rise in Nigeria, and in underdeveloped and developing countries of the world.

He disclosed that advance fee fraud, looting of public funds, and kidnapping for ransom, among other forms of criminality, are responsible for high cases of insecurity, occasioned by the increasing urge by young people to “make money” through dubious and life-threatening ways and means.

The CP highlighted that crimes such as advance fee fraud, looting of public funds, and kidnapping for ransom are driving insecurity, particularly as young people increasingly seek to amass wealth through dubious and dangerous means.

He assured that the Delta State Police Command remains committed to protecting lives and property across the state’s three senatorial districts. The command has recently recovered several firearms, including AK 47 and AK 49 rifles, from criminal gangs.

Abaniwonda also called on social media users who raise alarms about insecurity to provide verifiable information to aid law enforcement efforts.

He reiterated that combating crime is a shared responsibility between law enforcement agencies and the public, emphasizing the importance of credible information sharing, crime alerts, and the prosecution of criminal elements.

“Crime fighting is a joint responsibility of law enforcement agencies and the citizens through credible information gathering and sharing, genuine crime alerts, arrest and prosecution of criminal elements among us.

“One of the reasons for the high rate of criminality and insecurity is the new trend wherein some parents and unpatriotic citizens endorse and celebrate ill-gotten wealth or unexplainable riches flaunted by criminal elements,” he added.
