Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Northern States and the FCT, Rev. Joseph John Hayab, has decried the continuous killing of Christians in Northern Nigeria, saying the crisis has gone beyond what should be described as communal clashes.
Speaking during a town hall discussion, Rev. Hayab said he was not speaking from research but from painful personal experience.
“I’m not speaking from research, I’m speaking as a victim. I buried almost 2,000 people in Kaduna, and over 300 more after the Miss World riots,” he said.
He recalled witnessing churches being set ablaze, pastors brutally murdered, and entire families wiped out, yet authorities still refer to such incidents as communal conflicts.
The cleric lamented that Christians in Northern Nigeria have faced decades of persecution, which now amounts to genocide. He urged the government to stop downplaying the killings and take decisive steps to bring justice and lasting peace to the affected communities.
Rev. Hayab also called on the international community and human rights organizations to speak up against what he described as a long-standing pattern of targeted violence against Christians in the region.
