Rivers Speaker Calls for Bye-Election Amidst Mass Defection

Hon. Ehie Ogerenye Edison, the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, who is known for his loyalty to Governor Siminalayi Fubara, has officially notified the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) about 25 vacant seats in the State House of Assembly.

He also requested a bye-election to fill the vacant positions.

This was contained in a letter dated December 14, 2023, titled “NOTICE OF VACANCIES IN THE RIVERS STATE HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY PURSUANT TO SECTION 109(1)(G) AND (2) OF THE CONSTITUTION OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA 1999 (AS AMENDED) AND REQUEST FOR CONDUCT OF FRESH ELECTIONS IN THE 25 STATE CONSTITUENCIES IN THE RIVERS STATE HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY”.

Edison informed INEC about the vacancies in several constituencies.

He explained that the members representing these constituencies had collectively switched from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on December 11, 2023.

As a result, their seats were declared vacant during the 90th Legislative Sitting of the Rivers State House of Assembly on December 13, 2023, as per Section 109 (2) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended).

Edison, on behalf of the Rivers State House of Assembly, has requested INEC conduct a bye-election to fill these vacant seats.
