Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has officially announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), bringing an end to a protracted political crisis that has paralysed governance in the state for over two years.
Addressing stakeholders at Government House, Port Harcourt, the governor said the decision followed exhaustive consultations and was taken in the supreme interest of the people of Rivers State.
“To consolidate the peace we have so far enjoyed and to ensure accelerated development, I have formally moved to the All Progressives Congress,” Fubara declared.
The defection comes one day after the 26 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly loyal to him reaffirmed their own switch from the PDP to the APC.
The development is seen as the final chapter in Governor Fubara’s bitter power struggle with his predecessor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga quickly welcomed the governor and the lawmakers into the ruling party, describing the move as a boost for national unity and stability.
As at the time of filing this report, neither the PDP national leadership nor Minister Wike had issued any official statement.
The announcement broke on social media through a post by @dammiedammie35 and immediately went viral, attracting thousands of reactions within minutes.
