Tensions in Rivers State intensified on Friday following the resignation of Goodluck Ihemnacho, the appointed Sole Administrator of Ahoada East Local Government Area. His exit, confirmed through a viral resignation letter dated June 20, 2025, has stirred political controversy and raised questions over the circumstances surrounding his decision.
Ihemnacho, who was installed by the state’s sole administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.), only two months ago, cited a personal decision to return to the private sector. In the letter addressed to Ibas, he stated

“I humbly write to your noble office to convey to you my resignation as the administrator of Ahoada East LGA. My sincere gratitude goes to the government of Rivers State and the good people of Ahoada East for finding me worthy to serve as Ahoada East LGA from 11th day of April 2025 to 20th day of July 2025.”
However, the letter has drawn scrutiny for referencing an incorrect tenure listing, July 20, as the end date, despite the resignation being dated June 20. Beyond typographical issues, what’s fueling the current unrest are unverified reports that Ihemnacho may have been compelled to step down.
A source familiar with the incident, who requested anonymity due to the delicate nature of the matter, told reporters that the administrator was physically assaulted shortly before the resignation.

“Intelligence sources indicate that minutes before the purported resignation of the Ahoada East Administrator, some men moved into the LGA council, manhandled the administrator, and forced him to sign the resignation letter,” the source claimed.
Following the incident, the council secretariat was reportedly locked down, and security operatives have since taken control of the premises to prevent escalation.
