On March 18, 2025, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, declared a state of emergency in Rivers State due to escalating security concerns.
Prior to this declaration, the Nigeria Police Force had been closely monitoring rising threats to public order, sharing intelligence with other security agencies to prevent a breakdown of law and order.
The crisis, which has persisted for the past 22 months, reached a tipping point, necessitating urgent intervention to prevent further deterioration that could jeopardize national security.

In response, Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, has ordered the immediate deployment of additional personnel and resources to Rivers State.
This coordinated effort, in collaboration with the Armed Forces and other security agencies, aims to reinforce security, safeguard lives and property, and protect critical infrastructure.
The Nigeria Police Force affirms that individuals with grievances have the right to seek redress through legal channels.
However, any attempt to exploit the situation through unlawful protests, gatherings, or activities that threaten public peace will be met with the full force of the law.
Citizens are urged to remain law-abiding, comply with lawful directives, and continue their daily activities without fear.
The Nigeria Police Force remains committed to maintaining peace and security. Members of the public are encouraged to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities that may endanger public safety.
Individuals or groups with criminal intent are warned to stay away from Rivers State. Security forces are fully prepared to take decisive action against any threats to the state’s peace and stability.
