Akin Rotimi, a lawmaker representing Ekiti North 1 (Ikole/Oye) Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, was visibly emotional as he shed tears on Tuesday during the House’s session. The lawmaker lamented the tragic killings of two traditional rulers in Ekiti State.
Rotimi, who is also the spokesman for the House, drew the attention of his colleagues to the distressing incident involving the Onimojo of Imojo Ekiti, Oba Olatunji Olusola, and the Elesun of Esun Ekiti, Oba Babatunde Ogunsola. The monarchs were fatally attacked while returning from a meeting in Irele-Ekiti on Monday.
Upon resumption of plenary after a month-long break, Rotimi raised a motion of urgent national importance. He highlighted the escalating criminal activities in Ekiti North 1 (Ikole/Oye) Federal Constituency, leading to the loss of lives and properties. Rotimi emphasized the unique security challenges faced by the constituency, exacerbated by the state of dilapidated federal roads in Ekiti.
In response, the House passed resolutions urging the Chief of Army Staff to redeploy military personnel to the outpost along the Oke-Ako area of Ekiti to enhance security and prevent further attacks. Additionally, the Inspector General of Police, the Commandant General of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, and other security agencies were directed to deploy more personnel to Ekiti North 1 and ensure the perpetrators of the heinous acts are apprehended and brought to justice.
Furthermore, the House called on the Chief of Defence Staff to establish civilian joint forces in Plateau State following the attacks that resulted in the deaths of over 50 individuals in the Mangu Local Government Area. This decision followed a motion of urgent national importance raised by Ishaya Lalu, the member representing Bokkos Federal Constituency, Plateau State.
The House observed a minute of silence to honor the deceased and mandated its committees on Defence and Legislative Compliance to ensure compliance with the resolutions. Consequently, the plenary was adjourned until the following Tuesday.
