At a press conference today marking the one-year anniversary of the current administration, controversy erupted when a self-identified party surrogate, claiming to represent online media, called for increased efforts to combat the “Obidients” online says Rufai.
The term “Obidients” refers to the supporters of Mr. Peter Obi, the 2023 Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party.
The surrogate’s remarks were met with criticism for focusing on social media conflicts rather than addressing pressing national issues. Oseni Rufai, the popular co-host of Arise TV’s Morning Show, voiced his disapproval, stating that such priorities were misplaced.
Rufai, who conveyed his disbelief at the statement said, “The fact that they still think Obidients are their problem and not the economy is a strong indication of misplaced priorities.”
During the conference, which was intended to showcase the achievements of Chief Bola Tinubu’s administration over the past year, the surrogate’s comments diverged sharply from the expected focus on development and progress. Instead, the call to action was aimed at bolstering online efforts against Obi’s supporters.
Rufai’s reaction highlights a growing concern among many Nigerians that the administration is not adequately addressing the country’s economic challenges. Instead, some factions appear more interested in engaging in online disputes. Rufai emphasized that the focus should be on improving the economy and addressing the needs of the people, rather than getting embroiled in “senseless social media wars.”

The press conference, which featured various government officials, was meant to highlight the administration’s successes in areas such as infrastructure, healthcare, and education. However, the surrogate’s comments overshadowed these topics, shifting the conversation to political rivalries and online battles.
“People are suffering,” Rufai said. “The economy is in a bad state, and instead of working on solutions, some are more concerned about fighting battles on social media. This is not what we need right now.”
