The prison service within the Arctic Circle announced the passing of Alexei Navalny, the prominent opposition figure in Russia over the last decade.

Navalny, known as President Vladimir Putin’s most outspoken critic, succumbed to his demise while serving a 19-year sentence in prison, widely perceived as politically motivated.

He was relocated to a harsh Arctic penal colony in late last year.

According to the prison service in the Yamalo-Nenets district, Navalny reported feeling unwell after a walk on Friday and subsequently lost consciousness almost immediately.

Despite the swift response of an emergency medical team who attempted resuscitation, their efforts proved unsuccessful.

“The emergency doctors declared the prisoner dead. The cause of death is being established.”

Leonid Solovyov, Navalny’s attorney, informed Russian media that he would refrain from providing comments at this time.
