A Russian missile attack on the northeastern Ukrainian city of Sumy has killed more than 20 people, local officials confirmed Sunday.
The deadly strike occurred as residents gathered to mark Palm Sunday, one of the holiest days in the Christian calendar.
The city’s acting mayor, Artem Kobzar, said two ballistic missiles hit the city centre during the morning hours.

The impact caused widespread destruction, striking a public square where families had assembled to celebrate the religious holiday.

“On this bright Palm Sunday, our community has suffered a terrible tragedy,” AP quoted Kobzar as saying in a solemn statement posted to social media.
“Unfortunately, we already know of more than 20 deaths.”
Emergency responders continue to search through the rubble, with fears that the death toll may rise further.
Hospitals in the area are reportedly overwhelmed with casualties, and several buildings have been deemed structurally unstable following the explosions.
The attack has sparked renewed outrage across Ukraine and the international community, coming less than 24 hours after a major diplomatic setback.#Missile Strikes
