Former Governor Akinwunmi Ambode once alleged that the incumbent Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has a history of psychiatric treatment.
As captured in a viral video, the former governor questioned the fitness of Sanwo-Olu to lead Nigeria’s commercial capital, suggesting that the current governor had, in the past, undergone mental health treatment.

“This is someone who has been to Gbagada General Hospital for rehabilitation concerning mental health issues. I am not speaking out of malice; Lagosians deserve to know the truth about who is leading them,” Ambode said.
Supporters of Governor Sanwo-Olu dismissed the statement as “reckless, desperate, and unfounded,” accusing Ambode of engaging in character assassination after losing political relevance.
A spokesperson for Governor Sanwo-Olu, Gboyega Akosile, responded swiftly, urging the public to disregard Ambode’s comments.

“These are the ramblings of a frustrated politician. Governor Sanwo-Olu is sound, healthy, and fully capable of governing Lagos State effectively, as his track record clearly shows,” Akosile said.
Then, legal experts warned that Ambode could face potential defamation lawsuits if he fails to prove the allegations.
Meanwhile, public analysts expressed concern about the deteriorating tone of political discourse in Lagos, calling for restraint among political figures.
Mental health advocates also criticized the use of mental illness as a political weapon, warning that such rhetoric could deepen stigma against individuals managing psychiatric conditions.
