United States President Donald Trump has claimed that Washington stayed away from the recent G20 gathering because South Africa failed to acknowledge or confront what he described as “glaring human rights abuses”.
Trump said that the US refusal to participate was a deliberate message to Pretoria over what he called a pattern of abuse, misrule and violent repression that has gone unaddressed for years.
He insisted that global powers should not be expected to sit with a government that “pretends nothing is wrong while the country sinks deeper into crisis”.
According to him, the international community has been too lenient with South Africa despite recurring reports of political intimidation, police brutality and targeted attacks on vulnerable groups.
Trump argued that the G20’s credibility is undermined when countries facing serious rights violations are allowed to “hide behind diplomacy”.
He stated that the US absence should serve as a warning that Washington will not “reward indifference to human suffering”.
The remarks have added new pressure on the South African government, which has been widely criticised by civil society groups for ignoring rising violence, corruption and governance failures.
Human rights organisations have repeatedly accused the administration of using force to silence dissent while neglecting communities hit hardest by economic collapse and insecurity.
Opposition groups in South Africa say the government has grown increasingly hostile to scrutiny and is now facing mounting diplomatic repercussions.
Trump’s comments are expected to fuel further debate over the legitimacy of Pretoria’s leadership within international coalitions.
