A renowned human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong has called out the Nigerian military for overstepping its bounds by issuing statements on civil issues.
Effiong, a lawyer known for his vocal advocacy for human rights and democracy, has made it clear on his X handle that the military’s role is not to meddle in political affairs or intimidate civilians. “The Nigerian military has no business issuing a statement on a civil matter,” he asserted.
He emphasized the importance of maintaining a clear separation between military and civil jurisdictions.
Effiong’s remarks come in response to recent military statements that have been perceived as veiled threats aimed at suppressing nationwide protests. He was unequivocal in his stance, stating, “Nobody will be intimidated by your threat.”
