Senate President Godswill Akpabio has affirmed that the National Assembly will approve the use of taxpayers’ money to purchase a presidential jet if Chief Bola Ahmed Tinubu requests it.
Speaking during a plenary session on Thursday, Akpabio stated that there is currently no request before the Senate for such a purchase.
“We care about the President, and we care about the Nigerian people. We will approve things that will benefit the Nigerian people,” Akpabio said, addressing allegations regarding plans to buy a new jet for the presidential fleet.
Akpabio emphasized the Senate’s commitment to approving measures that improve the living standards of Nigerians while also supporting Tinubu in fulfilling his duties.
He stated, “We will approve things that would improve the people’s living standards. At the same time, we will also take cognisance of the president’s duties
“If his vehicle is bad, we will repair the vehicle. If his plane is bad, we will approve money to repair the plane. So that is not an issue. There is nothing before us. I don’t think you should worry about it,” Akpabio added.
The Senate President also highlighted the importance of safety, referencing the deaths of Malawi’s vice president and Iran’s president due to defective aircraft.
“But I can tell you that when you hear stories such as the death of the vice president of Malawi as a result of a defective plane, and then the death of the president of Iran as a result of defective aircraft, we shouldn’t ever sit and allow such to be at the ocean. It wouldn’t be,” he concluded.
