Senate Summons NDLEA Chairman Over Drug Bust at APC Senator’s Residence

The Nigerian Senate has summoned General Buba Marwa, the Chairman of the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), to address allegations related to a drug discovery at the residence of Deputy Senate Leader Senator Oyelola Ashiru (APC, Kwara South).

The NDLEA recently claimed that drugs and illicit substances were found during a raid on Ashiru’s home in GRA Ilorin, Kwara State.

Femi Babafemi, the agency’s director of media, revealed at a press conference in Abuja that the raid occurred on February 4, 2024, based on credible intelligence. Two of Ashiru’s aides, Ibrahim Mohammed and Muhammed Yahaya, were arrested, while a third suspect managed to escape.

He stated, “The personal house of the senator in GRA Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State, had been raided in recent past, where drugs and illicit substances were recovered while two of his aides: Ibrahim Mohammed and Muhammed Yahaya were arrested,” Babafemi said.

“Based on credible intelligence and surveillance which confirmed that the senator’s house was being used as a drug joint for drug dealers and users, the house was raided by our operatives at 1:30 pm on February 4, 2024, during which the two aides were arrested, while a third suspect escaped arrest,” he added.

In response to the allegations, the Senate has established a six-member investigative panel, chaired by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe (APGA, Abia South). The panel includes Senators Kaka Shehu (APC, Borno Central), Ede Dafinone (APC, Delta Central), Ireti Kingibe (LP, FCT), Afolabi Shauibu (APC, Ogun Central), and Lawal Usman (PDP, Kaduna Central)

Senator Ashiru raised a point of order under Senate Standing Order 42, expressing concern that the recent comments regarding the drug discovery have harmed his reputation. He emphasized that he does not consume alcohol or carbonated drinks, only water, and called for serious consideration of the matter.

Following this, the Senate held a closed-door session from 11:49 am to 1:25 pm to discuss the issue further.
