The Nigerian Senate has issued clarifications regarding recent discussions concerning the minimum age requirement for admission into tertiary institutions.
The Senate confirmed that the current age requirement of 16 years remains unchanged and dismissed recent suggestions of raising it to 18 years as personal opinions, not official policy.
Adeyemi Adaramodu, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, emphasized that any adjustments to the age requirement would necessitate legislative action through due process.
Adaramodu clarified in an interview with journalists that remarks made by the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, regarding a potential increase in the minimum age limit were not legally binding directives but rather expressions of personal views.
