Senate Summons Security Chiefs Over Plateau Killings

In the recent wave of terrorists attacks in Plateau state has prompted the Senate to summon the nation’s top security officials.

Among those called to appear before the upper legislative chamber in a closed session are Taoreed Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff; Hassan Abubakar, Chief of Air Staff; Yusuf Bichi, Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS); and Kayode Egbetokun, Inspector-General of Police (IGP).

The decision to invite the security chiefs was made on Saturday following a plea from Diiket Plang, the Senator representing Plateau Central, who brought the incident to the attention of the Senate.

The attacks, which occurred in 17 communities across Bokkos and Barkin-Ladi LGAs of Plateau state on December 23 and 24, resulted in numerous casualties as residents prepared for Christmas celebrations. Homes were destroyed, and properties were plundered during the assaults, leading to the displacement of many residents in the affected LGAs.

During the Senate debate, Plang expressed his dismay over the attacks, while Titus Zam, the Senator representing Benue North-West, voiced his concern that the service chiefs seemed to lack a comprehensive understanding of the country’s security situation.

Zam lamented, “Nigeria is in trouble. The service chiefs that appeared before this Senate seemed to know what they were doing. Six months down the road, it appears that there is no difference. I think we should call these service chiefs again. In my district, three LGAs out of seven are already overrun.”
